Document 1

Although his concern has developed into an overprotective nature, he has shown concern for his sister. His overprotectiveness raises the ethical principle of respect for other people’s rights. Richard fails to respect his sister’s choice and expects her to follow his directives. The main cultural issue concerned in this case is that of racism. Richard’s behavior borders racist behavior as he does not want his sister dating an Asian. In the case above, the duty to warn and protect is more important than client confidentiality. The main aim of a counselor is to listen and allow a patient to process their emotions. In the event these emotions involve violence that can harm other parties, it is imperative for the counselor to warn the authorities and protect the lives of other parties.
