Although born Jewish, Walter’s parents did not practice Jew. Barbara attended the Fieldston and Birch Wathen private schools in New York City, and graduated in 1947 from Miami Beach High School. In 1953, she graduated with a bachelor's degree in English from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville in New York. She worked briefly as a secretary before she got her first job as a journalist with the WRCA-TV an affiliate of National Broadcasting Company (NBC) as an assistant to Tex McCary the publicity director and an activist of the Republican. Walters managed to sharpen her writing skills, researching and filming while in NBC (Shepard 1997). Most of her stories in Today program related to socially important topics. She frequently got on the spot experience which gave her stories more credibility.The growth in her reputation earned her a position as a radio commentator on Emphasis and Monitor.
