Secondary School Preparation of Students for Tertiary Levels

Upon leaving secondary schools, most students can perform quite a good number of things that are paramount in academics on themselves. The students’ Communication skills is excellent; they can express themselves, and take themselves through some academics steps that are perceived to be fundamental in the tertiary levels. There are however a few things that secondary education fall short of in their academic programs that are still fundamental in the learning process and smooth transition to the tertiary and to university levels. Both Ursula Wingate and Andrew Miller have addressed some of this things that secondary schools fails to equip their students with to make them eligible for the smooth transition and absorption into the universities (Miller). According to Miller, the students from secondary schools do not have the necessary literacy skills that are required to facilitate smooth transition of the students.

Wingate also cites a few things that prove that secondary schools do not prepare their students enough to cope and have a smooth transition into the tertiary level education. Wingate seems to focus mostly on the aspect of argumentation. According to the study done , in Wingate’s journal, there was a lot of controversies whenever students were subjected on a simple test asking them to define what an argument is (Wingate). The different feedbacks derived showed that indeed students were lacking some critical aspects of essay writing and argumentation was the major one. Argumentation is cited as one of the significant thing that students need in writing their academic papers and handling various forms of academic learning at the university. 20 OCTOBER 2018.
