Various other concepts that are closely linked to interpersonal skills include emotional intelligence, listening, inquiring, and feedback skills which are essentially integral to communication. The essence of acquiring interpersonal skills is to prepare the learners for the future workplace communication demands by equipping them with the relevant skills. Notably, the lack of these critical skills can easily to distort or entirely block the communication process. In this regard, this paper takes a reflective approach to my capabilities as well as shortcomings in the area of interpersonal skills. As I will demonstrate, I consider myself to currently possess superior interpersonal and communication skills and quite fit to tackle the communication challenges of the modern-day workplace. After rigorously studying it, I have developed an unprecedented appreciation for the role of emotional intelligence in making communication experience in the workplace effective.

Courtesy of my experience, I now understand that as an emotionally competent person, I should be able to handle stressful situations and adapt accordingly to engagements with diverse people. I am appreciative of people’s uniqueness of opinions, ideas, beliefs, and interests and acknowledge that these factors will influence how my interaction with them proceeds, productively or otherwise. Another facet of interpersonal skills relates to verbal communication. More than ever before, I now recognize that active listeners are able to keep the conversation progressing by creating to the speaker the impression of interest in the subject. For instance, I have on various occasions restated the words of the person I am discussing an item with just to give him or her the confidence that I am both paying attention and understanding. Physical appearance, ornaments, and clothes are also nonverbal forms of communication. Nonverbal communication has various functions, ranging from complementing oral communication, modifying spoken words, expression of emotions, or even replace verbal communication when talking is inappropriate or impossible (Eunson 2016, p. From nonverbal cues, one can assess the level of attentiveness of the other persons. What I found most interesting about nonverbal communication is the range of ideas one can deduce from different gestures, from the other person’s insecurities, apathy, confidence, deceit, arrogance, affection, to outright hostility (Eunson 2016, p.
