Methods Essay on Police in the Hallways by Kathleen Nolan and Privilege by Shamus Khan

Write a five to eight page essay discussing the research methods used by Nolan and Khan. Describe and compare the two authors’ methods using terminology from the readings and lectures. Identify the different communities in both books. Discuss why a researcher might choose to use those approaches for their topics. Consider what other methods might have been used instead to learn about these specific communities. Discuss the pros and cons of alternative approaches to the research project. • Read Police in the Hallways by Kathleen Nolan and Privilege by Shamus Khan paying special attention to their research methods. • Write an essay discussing the following: o Which communities the authors researched  Identify all the different communities, not just the students.  Identify any communities that are missing but potentially important for the authors’ inquiries.  Discuss why the authors may have chosen to exclude those missing communities. o Research methods o How could the authors have learned about the same communities using different methods?  There are many different types of qualitative methods. Do you think they would have learned anything different from using different methods?  How did they learn about the communities? What did they do to recall what happened? How did they build rapport? etc.  Use terminology and concepts from the readings and lectures.  Consider the purpose and strengths, as well as the challenges and drawbacks, of using qualitative methods. How did the authors deal with verification, reliability and ethics? 1  How would using quantitative methods have changed what they learned about the communities?  How would positioning themselves differently have changed what they learned about the communities? To hand in the essay, bring it to class printed out *and* upload it to Blackboard using SafeAssign. You may hand in an optional draft at least two weeks before the due date. The draft will be edited and returned in the next class session. The draft will not be graded. Students who want to ensure a high grade and/or who want to improve their writing are encouraged to hand in a draft. Due dates are on the syllabus. The correct format is typed, 12 point font, 1.5 point spacing, and conforming to professional standards of grammar and punctuation. If you cite sources, include the author, title of article or book, name of institution or website (if applicable), and date of publication. You may use exact quotes from the book and other class readings, but use them sparingly. Do not cut and paste without using quotation marks. Student name, the course number and title (3015 Qualitative Studies of Communities), and date should appear on the top of the first page. Always use page numbers.
