Assessment of the Child: Functional Health Pattern Analysis Worksheet (Example)

Document Preview:

Functional Health Assessment Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation Functional Health AssessmentIntroduction Children depend on their guardians and parents for health management. Because they are incapable of making decisions they rely totally on their parents for their health management. They will accomplish tasks such as brushing their teeth and participating in bedtime stories without understanding that these duties are preventative measures (Stein et al. 1042) Preschool age toddlers will start noticing their internal body makeup and become aware of their body function. They know how things work in their bodies and develop curiosity about the opposite sex. School age children can take part in health promotion as well as prevention as their understanding of concepts is better. They understand that brushing their teeth will prevent cavities or that washing their hands protects them from falling sick (Stein et al. 1045). As such health professionals need to take care of their patients as allowing them to be involved in decisions about care. Conclusion Dependency on the perception of parents by a toddler can present problems for a nurse. This is because the health perception by parents influences the child’s management. Also non-compliance of parents about their health management translates to non-compliance in the supervision of the health of the child. The proper way of health assessment must involve the participation of the parent during the early years and the involvement of the child in the adolescent stage of maturity. This way the child will become aware of good health management practices. References Eccles J. S. (1999). The development of children ages 6 to 14. The future of children 30-44. Hook D. (2002).
