Each student will prepare and deliver a 5-6 minute speech that provides information that is new/innovative/different and interesting to your audience and designed to enlighten, educate, or clarify. The speech will be graded on organization, content, transitions, clarity, and effective delivery. You will be timed. A typed outline and bibliography of credible sources are to be handed to the instructor at the beginning of your speech. This must be completed in proper MLA format. As part of the assignment, you will be requested to do a peer evaluation, critiquing the speeches of two other students in your class, as well as a self-analysis. The speech must be delivered extemporaneously. Strictly reading of speeches will result in deduction of points. Practice is the secret of a successful delivery. For the delivery, an outline of the speech is required. A PowerPoint (visual and/or audio) aid is required. Make sure that all aids are incorporated smoothly into the presentation.
A typed outline and a bibliography of at least five credible sources must be turned in to the instructor at the beginning of the speech. The outline will contain an introduction, with an attention-getter, preview, and central idea (thesis). The body will be outlined with main points and transitions. The conclusion must contain a summary, a call to action if appropriate, and a clincher.
Speeches must be delivered extemporaneously. You may use note cards, or an outline, but do not “read” them verbatim; they should be used for notes. Memorized, manuscript, or impromptu delivery are not acceptable. A conversational style will enhance your grade. Furthermore, your speech will be strengthened by your citing of the sources, use of statistics, quotes, facts, and expert testimonials. Look like you are a professional. Business casual attire is required for your speech. See the suggested list at the end of the syllabus for possible topics.
10 pts will be retained for the critiques of your presentation and two classmates’ – 3 in total. Each critique should be about 200 words, focusing on things such as what was in the evaluation that was given to you with your grade – perception of speaker, vocal cues, thoroughness of topic – a general critique – don’t criticize, critique.
