GOGOLS 'The OverCoat' short story

Information Due Date Monday, March 4, 2019 12:00 PM Points Possible 0 . . ENG 102 Assignment #1— “The Overcoat” Draft Length: 4-5 pp. Deadline: 3/4/19 at the beginning of class. Formatting: 11 or 12 pt. font, double spaced, with 1” margins on all sides. Citations to specific passages in the text should be listed in parentheses. Ex.: (443). There is no need to include a works cited page, because you are not referring to outside materials in this paper, and we are all reading the same PDF version of the text. PLEASE BE SURE TO FORMAT YOUR PAPER ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS, OR YOUR WORK WILL BE RETURNED UNGRADED, AND YOU WILL EARN A ZERO ON THE ASSIGNMENT. Steps for the assignment: 1. Read Gogol’s short story “The Overcoat.” (You probably need to do this once for plot and a second or third time to pay attention to the structure and stylistic elements.) 2. Take notes on the text, using the “Critical Questions for Reading the Short Story” to shape your notes. Pay careful attention to style, language, narrative line, etc. Depending on which of the following questions you choose, you will need to pay even more attention to the aspect of the story that relates to the question you want to explore. 2. Read through the following questions: a. Gogol is known for his narrative style, known as “skaz.” Define “skaz,” and explain how the narrator of the Overcoat fits into that definition. How does the narrator’s voice affect the reader’s understanding of the text? To what extent does the narrator continue to be a presence in the story? Is he on anyone's side? Does he understand everything or is his perspective limited? How does his voice contribute to the atmosphere, meaning, and character development in the story? How does his language fit into that? b. Gogol is known as a Romantic realist, and one feature of this type of writing is the introduction of psychological space in the form of dreams, visions, hallucinations, or thoughts into the world of the text. Which views of reality does the author include? What roles do mental, supernatural, and concrete, etc. space play in the story? How many different views of reality does Gogol include, and what do they tell us about his understanding of reality itself? Be sure to focus on his psychology and the supernatural. Is he seeing things inside his own head or from outside of himself. How can you tell from the text? c. In the story, we witness Akaki Akakievich as both a flesh-and-blood man and also as a spirit. Aside from the transition from physical to spirit form, how does his attitude change in the course of the story? Why is this important for an understanding of Gogol’s over-all message in the story? (Students usually do not pay enough attention to his personality as a spirit. What is he like as a spirit?) d. We discussed the Russians’ view of Germans when discussing “Queen of Spades.” Gogol refers to Germans even more in “The Overcoat.” How does he represent them in the story? What associations does he make with the German ethnicity? How does the issue of nationality function in “The Overcoat”? In other words, why does the author devote time to this issue of ethnicity? 3. Choose the one you feel you can create the clearest, most logical essay to answer. Be sure to express your argument in an explicit, direct, clear, focused thesis statement. 4. Draft your 4-5 page paper to support that thesis. Make sure your paper has a clear introduction, clear, specific points to support your thesis, transitions, and a clear conclusion, etc. Use the Critical Editing checklist to help you proofread your work. Your essay must have all of the features listed on that sheet. 5. Edit your draft, making sure to fix any grammatical, punctuation, or content errors. If you have time, ask a friend to review your work, also. The Critical Editing checklist can help to focus their reading of your work. 6. Submit your paper electronically through blue assignment link at the top of this document before the beginning of class on 3/4/19. .
