Mental health problems are now thought of as being a much more common than had previously been supposed, and there is an increased awareness in society of the challenges that poor mental wellbeing can bring. Nevertheless challenges remain, not least the controversy over how we are to define or categorise mental health disorders, which are often more abstract and difficult to conceptualise than their physiological counterparts. In addition to this there remain widespread stereotypes about who is at risk of developing mental ill health as well as what kinds of behaviour are associated with mental distress. When we also acknowledge the considerable debate that exists around issues of treatment, social support and any obligations that wider society has to promoting good mental health, it is far from clear that straightforward solutions to the various mental health challenges that exist in the UK can easily be arrived at.
