Psychology and US History

For the Psychology This is the assignment: Chapter 1 - Various Approaches to Psychology Discussion 70 The purpose of this discussion is for you to demonstrate your understanding of the material. Approach your response as though it is a mini essay with complete sentences, distinct paragraphs, and correct spelling and punctuation. Grammar and spelling matter. Online courses demand the same standard of academic communication and use of grammar as face-to-face courses. Respond to the following prompts using a minimum of 300 words (total for all prompts, not 300 words for each prompt): In addition, you are expected to provide a supportive and/or reflective comment to the post of one classmate. Be sure to address your classmates by name when responding to their prompts. In order to receive the maximum possible 10 points, you must accurately and thoroughly answer each part of the discussion prompt using at least 300 words (including the prompt in your response is not included in the word count) and comment on the post of one of your classmates. Review the sections on Feminist Psychology and Multicultural Psychology. Why is it important to approach psychology from a sociocultural perspective? Give an example from something you have observed or experienced which demonstrates the huge impact that factors such as ethnicity, religion, occupation, or social class, have had on your or others' mental processes and behavior. Watch the Video on Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark. Why is it important to understand the impact their Doll Studies had on the historic Brown v. Board of Education civil rights case?Kenneth and Mamie Clark (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. Describe an area of contemporary psychology that you were not very familiar with before reading this chapter. Based upon your own experiences and observations, why do you think this is an important sub-field of psychology to study and work in? *This is my classmate’s response: Haris Amirie The importance of having a sociocultural perspective when approaching psychology is very powerful. It allows us to see certain situations from a different view point. It brings in people from different backgrounds to help better understand why and how things happen. The idea of having people from different cultures come together and give their outlook on certain issues is very moving. This will allow psychologists to look into their studies from different angles. There is no straight forward answer, in reality there will be many different answers. Some will be correct and some will be wrong. This unique perspective will allow us to see the smallest of matters on a very broad and open scale. One interesting example I thought about was different families/cultures outlook on their students career paths. In my family, I was given three options. It was I become a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. It wasn't until I entered college I began to questioned why my parents made me choose from these three things. They said that from past experiences they have noticed people with these careers have stable and happy lives. They didn't allow themselves to see if people with those careers actually have happy lives. Looking around college today, I have noticed that people from different background define having a stable happy life differently. To my parents it was making sure I became a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. To others it might be different. I noticed it varied among everyone. It is interesting to think that just the definition of one word "happy" can bring in so many different meanings from everyone. The Doll studies done by Kenneth and Mamie Clark was very important to the Brown v. Board of Education civil rights case. The Doll studies explained the racial segregation in our society and how it is very harmful. The children of the studies proved how bad the racial segregation truly is. The results of the study was that the kids said they white dolls were good and the black ones were bad. This played a key role in the the Brown v. Board of Education civil rights case. It proved how even little kids are beginning to be heavily affected by these actions. An area of contemporary psychology that I wasn't familiar was the personality psychology. Personality psychology affects everyone, it doesn't just affect a small group of people. It is very important because of the huge amount of people it affects. Response Paper Options: Answer just ONE of the following questions. 1) Zinn and Foner offer differing portrayals of the Columbus story and of colonization/imperialism in general. Discuss these portrayals, keeping in mind that Foner might be a bit more difficult to interpret because his version is presented in a bit more subtle (but no less biased) manner, while Zinn is not keeping any secrets regarding the motives and actions of Columbus, his men and other Europeans. The questions that historians, and with the Columbus issue, cultural activists and critics, have been considering include the following: 2) Compare Columbus's log entries with Las Casas's journal entries. a. Identify differences and similarities (e.g., how each describes the Arawaks). b. Identify topics the other did not discuss. c. What accounts for the differences? the similarities (their goals, their job functions, their status in relation to the other Spaniards)? 3) What sources are the textbook authors using? Pay special attention to Zinn's sources; they give his history a certain credibility on this topic. 4) If communities share common interests, did Columbus and Las Casas belong to the same community? If so, what are their common interests? (What was Columbus in the Caribbean for? Las Casas?) If not, what interests separate them into different communities? Did Las Casas have more in common with the Arawaks than he did with Columbus? *this is the guideline for how to write Response Paper Response Papers After you’ve read the assigned chapters for the week, consider writing a brief response to the material. Use this as an opportunity to discuss some of the larger issues or themes in the readings. While you will need to re-state some of what is in the textbook to formulate your answer, you must elaborate on what you've read. Create an informed opinion. Be sure to: --answer the question --use only the textbooks to write your Response Paper unless otherwise instructed --provide specific examples from the textbooks for your statements --quote your sources (the textbooks) --cite your sources--provide page numbers Submission Guidelines: 1. Deadlines for each Response Paper are listed in the schedule. NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED. 2. You must use the following format for your Response Papers: --Chapter Number: --Module Number: --The Question (copy the question that you are answering): --Answer: (250-350 word answer). 3. Yes, your response must be between 250 and 350 words in length. When calculating word count, don't include the heading or question in your count; count only the words in your actual answer. 4. For each Module, you will either a) see a link to specific Response Paper prompts OR b) see a link to appropriate textbook chapter questions. In this case, you must choose to write your RP from chapters listed for the current week's Module. You may not choose a question or prompt from a previous week's Module or for a Module that we haven't yet covered. 5. Answer just one question per module. 6.Not every RP is accepted. The most common reasons RPs are not accepted: a) The RP is too short. b) The RP doesn't evince that the student has followed the instructor's advice given in a previous RP (eg.: Regarding your previous RP, the instructor said that in future RPs you need to cite sources and you don't do so). c) The RP doesn't answer the question or address the issue. d) The student does not do their own work on the RP. See the "Academic Standards" document in the Course Overview. If your RP is not accepted, you MAY NOT REVISE it. You must move on to the next RP. 7. Notice in the class Schedule that while you only have to turn in 6 RPs, you have 7 opportunities to turn in RPs. I suggest that you not wait to turn in your RPs. You'll want to give yourself a cushion in case you have to miss an opportunity to turn in an RP or in case one of your RPs is not accepted. If you choose to do 7 RPs, the instructor will not grade all 7. The first 6 will be counted toward your grade. The instructor will not count the seven best. 8. You may not work ahead. Each Module will be open for only the time designated in the schedule. 9. Acceptable formats: --Microsoft Word --PDF --rtf --Don't use .Pages
