The Cruaades from a Muslim Perspectice

Capstone Essay Rubric Purpose: 1. Demonstrate an awareness of the facts of your topic 2. Demonstrate an understanding of why specific people and events matter in the historical record – why are some more important than others in understanding the cause of historical events? 3. Demonstrate an awareness of different perspectives that historians have of specific problems and events in history. Formatting: 10 points The capstone project consists of a mini-research essay. This is a paper about half the length of a seminar-type paper you would produce in many upper level history classes. The purpose is to introduce you the ways of thinking about, researching, and writing historically. Your paper will be in essay format (that is, not written as a series of short answers to conform to this consist of 5,000 words minimum (excluding bibliography), double-spaced, Times New Roman font, standard margins. Pick a topic: select a topic that you will find interesting and then drill down into the topic to come up with a narrow, clearly delineated argument. Don’t be too broad – general discussions like “In this paper I discuss the crusades in Iberia” are too general and cannot work for a capstone project. If you are worried about nature of your topic, contact Dr. Decker or the TA. Sources: 20 points Use and cite a minimum of 3 primary sources and five secondary, scholarly sources (see the Bibliography presentation to understand what scholarly sources are. Things like general encyclopedias, nearly all web pages, blogs, YouTube videos, popular magazine articles, and journalistic pieces found in newspapers and online are not scholarly academic work and do not count). Argument: 20 points Your paper will have a clearly stated argument – in your first paragraph, you will clearly state your argument. The historical position you stake out will be defended throughout the paper. Nothing else matters except advancing your argument. Historiography: 20 points Your paper will begin with a review of the historiography (a survey of who has talked about the problem in professional historical literature, how they have handled the problem, what approach they have taken, and the areas in which they did not answer the question entirely to your satisfaction.). Your historiographic portion will consist of at least 500 words. Body and Presentation of Argument: 20 points The majority of your paper will be developing your argument and marshalling and explaining the supporting evidence you have analyzed in reaching your conclusion. Please note that the temptation is for students to summarize a lot of material – if you do this you will not succeed. When you put details down on paper, always ask yourself – why is this necessary? How does it advance or support my argument? Obviously sometimes you need to describe an issue or event in order to provide the historical context to your reader and to help you frame your argument, but be careful. There should be a “so what” statement that flags to the reader where you are going with your argument and why the details you are including matter. Example: “The siege of Antioch was a turning point in the crusaders relations with their Muslim neighbors. Why this is so is exemplified at the siege of Ma’aret en-Numan when the crusaders subjected the population to a brutal siege but not local Muslim military aid was forthcoming. The Muslims simply had had their fill of fighting the crusaders at this point and could not envision an immediate military solution to the Frankish invasion.” Here you make a statement – the siege of Antioch was a turning point, then provide evidence as to why you think this is true. Cite primary and secondary data in support of your view. Bibliography: 10 points Your bibliography will be thorough, reflecting the works you cite in the footnotes of your paper. The bibliography will be properly formatted according The Chicago Manual of Style. If you use software like EndNote, RefWorks, or Zotero (which I encourage but do not require) to keep track of your bibliography and format your paper. Due date: December 4 I chose to write about the Muslim perspective of the Crusades. We were able to make our own topics so if you would like to change it to a topic that you are more knowledgable about, that can be discussed.
