Response Essay: Aristotle

Now find as many or as few of the following questions to answer when drafting your 1-2 page Response Essay: In the dense beginning of this selection for the longer work, Aristotle begins with a definition of rhetoric. What elements does he include as part of rhetoric? What elements does he exclude? The argument presented asks that speakers not turn to science but rather to "generally accepted principles," by which he means logical methods such as comparison/contrast, cause and effect, and classification. How are these principles used in speaking and writing? Aristotle makes clear that rhetoric can be used in all kinds of speaking, not just in court for persuasion. Why is a consideration for the audience and for truth important in all speaking and writing? According to this selection, why is the integrity of the speaker so important to the audience? This section emphasizes three words: proofs, enthymemes, and syllogisms. These words explain the basis for logical (Greek logos) and honest rhetoric. The proof must be reliable and defendable, otherwise true. The logic must be clear even if condensed (enthymeme): he must have done it; he was the only one there. The logic of the longer argument (syllogism) must be valid: only a fool would eat cord products; Tom eats corn products; Tom is a fool when he eats corn products. How are these logical methods used in modern rhetoric/advertising? When Aristotle talks of character in the speaker, he describes what we refer to as ethos (the Greek word from which "ethics" derives). How does Aristotle use the idea of good character to describe his ideal rhetorician? Aristotle stresses the "hearers." This means we should focus on the emotional state of the audience, which we now refer to as pathos, the Greek word from which "empathetic" derives. Why is it important that the audience be in tune with and inclined to agree with (or at least attend respectfully to) the speaker? While reading, you may want to consider keeping notes. In order to do so effectively, I have included some suggestions on some possible things you may want to consider when annotating here. Also, you may also want to consider keeping 3x5 cards after each selection with the author's name, the title of the work, and a brief summary as this will help you with the Midterm and Final Exams. Finally, you should also start considering certain passages from each reading assignment that you may want to include once you start writing your response essays since there is a requirement in this class for you to respond to at least twelve of the fifteen assigned readings. The handout given above will cover how to use those passages in either quote or paraphrase form -- both of which require quote sandwich form and proper in-text and Work Cited citations. When drafting your Response Essay, remember to follow the classical structure of an essay (see "Things You Should Know from English 101" for more info). Whether in the introduction or in the first body paragraph, you should establish the author as a reliable source for this discussion. If you are ever unfamiliar with the authors you are reading, this is one of the only times you could include research for these papers, but even that needs to come from a reliable source (no Wikipedia, history.com, biography.com). My advice is to use encyclopedias for general biographical information. If you choose to include an outside source for this purpose, this is good practice for using the quote sandwich form, which you should use with every source you include in the essays you write -- including references to the work itself. A quote sandwich always begins by introducing the source and explaining (briefly) why they are reliable enough to be included in your essay. After that has been established, you can include a (brief) summary of their work, a quote or a paraphrase, which would also include an in-text citation (MLA says it would be a parenthetical, which is what this is, with the author's last name and the page number where the information can be found). Also, don't forget to include a Works Cited page any time you use source material -- including the sources I am giving you. Again, if this is not something you are familiar with, please refer back to the "Things You Should Know..." section. Finally, your voice should be found following any source's voice. Since this is the form you will write with throughout your academic career, you might as well get into the habit of practicing it that way now.
