I have decided for Week Seven to answer the question prompt about the Watergate Scandal and how it affected the Presidency and the people. As well on how the Republican Party manage to whether Richard Nixon's damaged reputation and come back to the Democratic incumbent, Jimmy Carter, in the pivotal 1980 Presidential election? But to understand what the Watergate did we would need to understand what it is, which the Watergate Scandal was an effort to bug the Democratic National Committee office at the Watergate Hotel and subsequent attempts to cover it up. When first happened later in that year by April, a resounding 83 percent of the American public had heard or read about Watergate, as the president accepted the resignations of his top aides John Ehrlichman and H.R. Haldeman and in turn, Nixon's approval ratings fell to 48 percent. It went downhill for there for Nixon when he took a severe hit by the televised Watergate hearings that began in May 1973. (Kohut, 2014)
The people viewed had changed on the scandal after those hearings, a 53% of the majority came to see it as a serious matter and not just as politics, from 31% but had believed it to be that before the hearings. 71% of the public had come to see Nixon guilty of wrongdoing. 37% thought he had tried to cover up the ordeal, and 29% thought he knew about the bugging but did not plan it all 8% even went to it that he knew about it from beginning to end of the bugging and the whole ordeal. It was only 15% that had believed Nixon had no knowledge of this ordeal, and that Nixon spoke up as soon as heard of it. That was an effect on Nixon presidency even more so when courts ruled that he had to give up his taped conversations to special prosecutor Archibald Cox, Nixon had ordered for the dismissal of Cox in what became to known as the Saturday Night Massacre. They wanted Nixon impeached when gone, the people did not forgive and forgot that was also an effect upon the people after this ordeal they did not trust the government and hard to forget about and wanted Nixon charged for possible criminal charges. (Kohut, 2014)
The Republican Party had weathered Nixon reputation that the Democratic candidate had won the presidential election in the year 1980 by using the scandal to their advantage and squander his person in the election that soon as he was out of the way they had to turn his attention toward Jimmy Carter instead but even then he was non-existent that when running everyone was like, ''Carter who?" Ford had painted Carter as someone who was an ignorant liberal who would create new government programs paid for by tax increases. The Republican Party had made him seem like a fool and played on his mistakes that were brought up in the press. (Strong, 2018)
