I found that this week’s reading on Ethics of Persuasive Writing was interesting to say the least. What stood out to me, is that you need rivalry in your communication and writing, “the purpose of dialogue is not to achieve a warm feeling of mutuality. It is a search for understandings that can transform reality” (CM 220 Unit 2 reading Part I, “Linda Flower’s Rhetoric of Community Engagement”). These rival hypotheses that can be gained from those reading or listening to your discussion and can lead to new and better idea. As stated in Steve John’s Ted Talk “Where Good Ideas Come From” (2010) “new ideas don’t come from “Eureka moments” but from places where people can talk and argue that idea”, the example was the watering hole or the coffee shop. Places where it is more chaotic not neat and tidy.
For my Ted Talk I chose Derek Sivers “How to start a movement”. This short video demonstrated the importance of being a leader and even more importantly how to be persuasive, by having fun, and how you should aid your followers and help them understand what you’re doing. Also, to be a good follower, as stated by Derek Sivers, “New followers emulate the followers”. This essentially gives courage to those that didn’t have it to start. I chose this video since there are always new and better ways to encourage others to an example would be, getting a speaker and playing music while you help pick up trash on the side of the road. This would make the choir of cleaning up the community look more enjoyable and would encourage others to join.
Do you feel that it’s harder to start a following or to be the first one that joins the new leader?
