BECA:Life on TV:Critical view on life

ASSIGNMENT - Critical Analysis Term Paper 2 This is a formal essay that provides specific examples from one or more episodes of your chosen show to support a clearly stated thesis and a provide a critical analysis of the show that you chose to write about in the Critical Orientation assignment. You are required to use at least one key concept from our course, and to analyze at least one aspect of your show using a method of analysis from our course. You should explicitly reference the textbook pages and chapter that are the source of the concept and the analytical method by quoting them AND putting them in the reference list. Length, format, and audience Length: 2000 words, not including title page, abstract and references. If it's longer, please edit your essay down to the required length. Format: APA (see general format advice here). This is NOT a research essay that would require you to incorporate quotes from disparate sources. The only works that MUST appear in your reference list are the episode(s) of the show that you are discussing (see Other non-print sources, Television Broadcast or Series Episode), the chapter entitled ‘Guidelines for Television Criticism’ from the book Television Criticism by Victoria O’Donnell, and at least one relevant chapter from our textbook How to Watch Television (see format for Article or Chapter in an Edited Book). If you choose to use additional works to clarify your thesis, they should also be listed in the reference list using appropriate APA format. Audience: Me, academic TV critics. Assignment objective 1. Demonstrate that you understand and can use at least one key concept presented in our course to help you interpret the show. 2. Analyze at least one aspect of the show you write about in a systematic, organized manner that breaks it down into the categories provided by the textbook method (example, analyze a character using the Taxonomy of Character from the textbook). 3. Expand your initial understanding and experience of your show (your critical orientation) by writing a critical essay about it. Instructions Gather together all of the writing and thinking you have done about your chosen show in this course, including the graded discussions and assignments. Skim the .pdf file ‘Guidelines for Television Criticism’ linked on our iLearn site, taking note of the different sections in the file. Each section might correspond to a section of your final essay. What you choose to use and develop into your own analysis of your chosen show is largely up to you. However, you have already written something about story and genre and 'the look of program and its codes (visual style). This assignment calls for an expository/persuasive essay that convinces us that your analysis and evaluation of the program is reasonable and well supported by the evidence. Like any academic essay, it should have the following structure that clearly and explicitly presents the required elements of the assignment: Introduction: (1) an introduction with a thesis statement that encapsulates the main point of the essay and states the purpose of your critique, (2) A very brief summary of the premise and characters, production information about the episode you have chosen (3) a description of your critical approach to the program in which you explicitly discuss the key concepts, method of analysis and questions you chose to ask (suggested length, maximum 2 pages) The body of your essay (5 pages) contains your analysis and interpretation of the categories you have chosen with examples from the program that describe and clarify what you think is special about your show. The categories you choose to expand on depend on your analysis of your show. The following categories from the reading on 'Guidelines for Television Criticism' are suggested: Story and Genre; Structure of the Program; Demographics (target audience); Context; The Look of the Program and its Codes (Visual Style); as well as Analysis and Judgement. A conclusion with your overall evaluation and summary of thoughts about the program (1 page) You are encouraged to summarize and include the best insights from your earlier assignments from this course. You will also be writing new original sections for this final essay. You should use the categories from Guidelines for Television Criticism listed above to help you organize your thoughts. She has included questions to help you start writing in each of the sections of her chapter. Grading Criteria In order to do well on this assignment, you are REQUIRED to: Use at least one specific concept that you learned about in our course (example: realism) to interpret the show you've chosen. Give a definition or example of how the concept is used in our textbook. Here's a list of key concepts from our textbook, and the chapters they come from, that you can USE in your analysis and CITE in your References list. Present a clear and nuanced argument about the show you've chosen to analyze (an argument is something that people could reasonably have different opinions on) presented in a thesis statement that appears in the introduction to your essay Develop a critical analysis that is appropriate for academic criticism (example: feminist criticism is interested in gender-based inequality). Here is an example essay that demonstrates what I am looking for.
