These videos focus on the physical and cultural geographies of the various regions of Africa. While the tourism videos do not show the serious economic and health crises crippling many African countries, the negative view is often the only one we ever get from the news media and even in college classes. I have chosen instead to focus on the natural and cultural beauty of Africa, and the various adaptations different peoples have made to their natural environments.
View the videos below. The Indiana University videos give a factual overview of the population, language, and religious geographies of the region. The others present short case studies of places and regions. Watch these videos, then select a region or country of Africa and or Southwest Asia. The National Geographic Traveler video websites have multiple videos. I encourage you to explore as many of them on these sites as you can. Plan a tour and describe what you would expect to see. Use the videos and additional websites to plan your trip. Since this would involve a long flight, you might as well stay a long time. Plan for at least 3 weeks. Budget is not an issue. However, the purpose of your trip is to engage with the people, the environment, the history, and the culture, not to stay in the nicest resorts and spend 3 weeks "beach-hopping." Make sure you list the supplemental websites you use. Be as detailed as possible in your itinerary. Don't just say, for example, Day 6--Safari. Also, do not just copy a tour already available online. If it even looks that way, I will run your tour through SafeAssign, and if you have plagiarized your tour from what is already offered by a travel agency, you will receive a 0 for the assignment and I will submit your name to the Dean of Students for investigation of plagiarism.
