Throughout the 1700s and into the 1800s, mentally ill people were treated as if they were possessed (Pomerantz, 2013). Mental hospitals did exist throughout this period; however, they were more like prisons and treatments were extreme from both an ethical and moral view point. These institutions were not very helpful. Lightner Witmer’s 1907 definition of “clinical psychology” and today’s definition of the same term differ a bit. In 1907, psychotherapy was not included in the definition of this term as it is now (Pomerantz, 2013). Once the discovery of how people’s thoughts and perceptions of life issues influenced behavior, clinics for the purpose of treating this illness were opened. In 1896, when Witmer opened the first psychological clinic, the definition of cognitive psychology changed forever (Pomerantz, 2013). By 1935, there were about 150 psychology clinics across the nation.
Psychology has made a big impact on people’s lives and the way they live them. Thanks to early discoveries, psychologists and other types of human service providers can intervene and help make people’s lives easier. This includes having abilities in retraining behaviors to more socially accepted ones, redirecting thought processes, and so much more. Because of this, cognitive psychologists and teachers are actually quite similar (Pomerantz, 2013). Professionals are able to help their clients with various different problems simply by teaching them. Most people working with a psychotherapist will have home work such as instructions to practice their newly learned skills next time they are in an appropriate setting (Pomerantz, 2013). Psychotherapy helps people feel better (Pomerantz, 2013).
