Student’s Name: Instructor’s Name: The title of Course: Date: 1) What perceptions of “others” are reflected attending Miss Columbia’s School House (Document 1)? How does Aguinaldo’s criticism of America’s policies towards the Philippines (Document 2) echo the 1894 political cartoon? What do these two documents suggest about the way America perceived conquered peoples and the likelihood that they would ever be fit for American citizenship and its liberties? In the cartoon a number of students have been shown inside the gate. These ‘others’ are seen quarreling and behaving mischievously. As the caption says outside are Hawaii and Canada Miss Columbia standing at the main gate is representing America. Within the boundaries of the school people of different origins are fighting like Chinese Irish and French. Africa is also portrayed using the character held by Miss Columbia as if she is controlling that black child. Aguinaldo criticizes American policies regarding to negatively publicize America. The efforts and thoughts presented in past though favored equality to a great extent but it does not empower us or make us the ambassador of equality and social justice in the world since till now we have ourselves not been able to overcome these issues (Young Mitchell). Then who has given us the right to dictate or even intervene and interfere in other world affairs that pertain to inequality and injustice? References Chong Alberto and Hugo Nopo.
