In the midst of the story, the author attempts to come up with an answer to a question that seems rather difficult to answer. The story, therefore, revolves s around the quest of understanding what the definition of a good man could be and why it is that there are very few of them left in the current context. In the story, a majority of the different characters in the book are portrayed to be in the belief that they are good people simply because they have been able to abide by the moral principles they are exposed to. According to the author, the moral codes available are said to be flawed hence making them be inapplicable mostly since each seems to have been blinded by their understanding of the concept of self-righteousness (O'Connor 357).
