Literary Analysis Essay of "The Handmaid's Tale" story

PURPOSE For this assignment you will write a short (3-5 page) Literary Analysis Essay. The purpose of the Literary Analysis Essay is to closely analyze a source. This assignment is intended to help you begin to understand how to use sources in an academic environment. OBJECTIVES: Critically read, analyze, and evaluate information, rhetorical patterns, and structural elements in a given text (such as a story, essay, poem, textbook, or visual material.) Formulate and express information and ideas in a variety of written forms and rhetorical patterns, demonstrating a clear purpose, focus, thesis, organization, and consideration of audience. DESCRIPTION: The Literary Analysis Essay will be tied to the reading that we do from The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. You will choose one of the three prompts from the list below to focus on. If there is something else that you would like to write about please acquire permission from me before beginning to write. Your final essay should include specific references to the book and at least one additional source. You should include specific evidence from the book, included as either direct quotes or paraphrases. Your essay should also include an appropriate thesis statement. Take into account the fact that the events that appear in The Handmaid’s Tale are all based on real-world events. That is to say, Atwood’s rule in writing this book was that she would not include anything that humans hadn’t already done to each other. Compare and contrast three or more of the events in the book with their real-world equivalent. Take into account the theme of space in The Handmaid’s Tale. Each character in the book has some sort of defined personal space (e.g., Offred’s space is her bedroom; Serena Joy’s space is the garden and the sitting room). How does space relate to the amount of power (or lack thereof) that each character has? Choose three or four characters to focus on. Take into account the idea of hope (or lack of hope) that appears throughout the book. What role does hope play in the book? Is the book ultimately an optimistic or pessimistic book? Synthesize the differences between the book and either the recent TV show of the same name OR the 1990 movie. What are the similarities and or differences? Speculate as to why certain cinematic decisions were made AND how those cinematic decisions affect our experience of the story.
