Watters and Armstrong Essay

Must be full 4 pages and follow all the directions and must read BOTH the readings and attachment! Karen Armstrong, “Homo Religiosus” (New Humanities Reader) Ethan Watters, “The Mega-Marketing of Depression in Japan” (New Humanities Reader) Considering the ideas from both of these texts, respond to the following prompt: To what extent are key human emotions and instincts (to feel sadness, to experience ‘ekstasis’) universal, and to what extent are they determined by an individual’s cultural and historical context? In “The Mega-Marketing of Depression in Japan,” Ethan Watters develops a narrative that highlights the stark differences between the American and Japanese conception of depression, and what happens when one culture attempts to exert its ideals onto the other. We have already seen that, in “Homo Religiosus,” Karen Armstrong argues that the “desire to cultivate a sense of the transcendent may be the defining human characteristic” (6-7). The very title of her essay, with its self-conscious echo of the name of our species, “homo sapiens,” seems to endorse the idea of universality – the idea that there are certain aspects of human experience, such as the urge to seek transcendence, which we all share. Also talk about in body, How has the concept of depression developed over time in Japan? What factors have influenced these changes? • ● Watters writes that there are several Japanese words and phrases that have often been translated into English as “depression,” but none of these mean precisely the same thing as the English word (521). Does the existence of these different words and phrases mean that the experience of depression is fundamentally different in Japan to the United Sates? • ● Is yuutsu (521) connected with Armstrong’s idea of transcendence or ekstasis? If so, how can we explain that the former evokes a melancholic feeling and the other an ecstatic one? What does this say, if anything, about the commonality of human emotional experience? • ● What roles have technology and capitalism played in shaping the ways in which we understand or experience religion (in the Armstrong text) and depression (in the Watters text)?
