Document Preview:

Name: Professor: Course: Date: Why I Am a Psychoanalytic Critic Psychoanalytic criticism represents the description or use of unintentional emotions needs and desires in literary representations that allude to intentional or unintentional emotions and feelings in either the authors or figures used in the literature. Such psychological feelings usually denote an underlying psychological state in the author and the choice to use literature to convey them either intentionally or otherwise is the very meaning of psychological criticism. This paper will use John Updike's ‘A & P' and William Carlos Williams' ‘The Use of Force' to not only demonstrate what psychoanalytic criticism is but also expose the meaning of certain psychological feelings such as repression defenses the unconscious active reversal and fear. The two stories will form a detailed basis of the reason why the author is a psychological critic with demonstrations based on these underlying psychological feelings. Aspects of William's ‘The Use of Force' has the father denoted as purely positive and supportive of the doctor's cause. However deeper inspection based on how the child reacts to his attempts to hold her down for the doctor to carry out his examination reveals another case of selective perception where the author chose to point out certain aspects of the man's behavior and ignore others. Conclusion Therefore the presence of psychoanalytic criticism cannot be doubted. Based on John Updike's ‘A & P' and William Carlos William's ‘The Use of Force ' we find that various psychoanalytic aspects such as repression fear the unconscious and selective perception. These elements are indeed representative of psychoanalytic criticism in the authors. Works Cited Updike John and Etienne Delessert. A & P: Lust in the Aisles. Redpath P  1986. Williams William C.
