Drug Addiction Essay

Drug addiction often results in the lack of ability to actually control the use of the substance being abused. Such drugs include marijuana, alcohol, heroin, cocaine and nicotine. Those who are addicted often abuse the substance despite knowing its harmful effects. Drug addiction has been a major concern in the society due to the detrimental effects it has on the individual and the whole community. Therefore, drug addiction is a bad vice in the society which needs to be taken care of and eradicated if possible. Other medical issues that may be caused by drug addiction include stroke, cardiovascular diseases and Hepatitis B and C. Drug use directly affects the community and the society as a whole. The effects of drug addiction are not only on the user but they extend to people close to the individual as well.

It often leads to damaged relationships with their children, family and society. Children born to parents who are addicted to drugs are often neglected and therefore, most of their needs are not met (Sperry et al, 415). Tobacco smoke which is emitted by smokers exposes people around smokers to diseases such as heart disease and lung cancer. Moreover, rehabilitation for an individual suffering from drug addiction is costly which often involves members of the society to contribute to such a course whereas they could have used the money in other constructive ways. The government spends billions of money while trying to control the use of drugs in the country. This money could have otherwise be channeled to various state projects such as improving the conditions in hospitals.

Continuous use of alcohol has been closely associated with various offenses such as property offenses, domestic violence and driving while under the influence of drugs. Pregnant women still have miscarriages due to other causes such as high blood pressure even when they have not ingested drugs. According to studies carried out in the past, some of the leading cases of premature births are undernourishment of the mother and infant and severe maternal anemia (Yakasai et al, 31). Some people are born with mental disorders and therefore, drugs cannot be blamed entirely for such a situation. The leading cause of abuse of spouses and children is mainly caused by substance abuse. However, parental stress and marital strife could be the reason for child abuse in the family.
