Natural History Museums and Environmental Education

Students will be required to develop a mock instructional program for a museum. The instruction can be intended for one for the following forms of delivery: print, online, CD-ROM, or Powerpoint. Develop a museum public program or exhibit illustrating object-based learning and best practices of museum education regarding learning theories. The program will incorporate selected learning theories and explain their applications for the museum project. The delivery format of the program or exhibit can be developed as an interpretive guide or tour; exhibit or exhibit script; online or technology program, game, exhibit; or Powerpoint. An approved abstract must be approved by the instructor before writing the paper. Incorporate citations and a bibliography from readings. Your final project will consist of two components—the actual program or exhibit and a narrative about the project. The project narrative should include the following information in this order: Title of instructional program Subject matter Objects (select no more than 10 objects for interpretation) Program goals (what do you want learners to remember after they have completed the program) Target audience (intended audience) Learning objectives (be specific—refer to online resources on “Writing Behavioral Objectives”) Applied learning theories (explain which learning theories have most application for your program) Instructional strategies (what kinds of activities will you incorporate—hands on interactions, discussions, games, interactive technology?) Evaluation (explain how you plan to evaluate the program) Museum learning research (what opportunities are there for conducting museum learning research) *Please Note: Final Projects should be typed (12 point font), double-spaced, in the Chicago Manual of Style format. Remember to submit an abstract for approval before writing the paper. A minimum of eight references will be required. You may use both Internet sources and non-Internet sources in writing the paper.
