Are there monsters in Gillian Flynn’s novel, Gone Girl

Essay Topic #2: Are there monsters in Gillian Flynn’s novel, Gone Girl— and if so, who or what are they? Discuss what Flynn says about what a monster is and what makes someone monstrous—and how she says it-- in this novel. Your paper should contain:  a thesis statement which clearly identifies the main points that the paper will explain/ explore, contained in an...  interesting, well-organized opening paragraph (funnel or block structure) which draws in the reader and provides context  a minimum of three body paragraphs-- each of which contains: NO MORE than one main idea, and a clearly- stated TOPIC SENTENCE, SUPPORTING EVIDENCE and EFFECTIVE TRANSITIONS-- plus a short (3-4 sentences) conclusion which restates the main points and brings the essay to a satisfying conclusion (no “openings”!) In terms of its content: > all main points should be relevant and significant to the subject > the main points should all be different from each other (ie, no repetition) > the main points should be arranged in an appropriate order > the thesis statement of the paper should be well-supported by factual and detailed information > the thesis statement should be well-supported by an adequate number of quotations from primary or secondary sources > sources should be appropriately documented with short-form MLA notes > paper should contain an appropriately-formatted MLA Works Cited list (please do not create a separate page for this list; include it on the last page of your paper) > NB: It is EXTREMELY important that you make specific reference to the works that you are discussing (ie, through the use of direct quotations or paraphrase) in order to PROVE your contentions. Please remember that direct quotations should be introduced by a COLON, a COMMA or a SIGNAL PHRASE, and must then be APPROPRIATELY DOCUMENTED (if you’re not sure about how to do this, see me or CONSULT THE OVERVIEW SHEETS THAT I SENT YOU FROM THE OWL WEBSITE). If the information you are using comes from a secondary source, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THIS SOURCE BE CLEARLY AND SPECIFICALLY DOCUMENTED, AS FAILURE TO DO SO CONSTITUTES PLAGIARISM. THIS INCLUDES ANY ELECTRONIC SOURCES. You will automatically lose a full point if you fail to provide me with specific and properly-formatted notes (please note that this is the beginning; if the problem persists throughout the paper, you may lose .25% for every improperly-formatted note...); you will automatically lose three points if you fail to provide me with a specific and properly-formatted Works Cited list. If there is indication that you have used a secondary source and not acknowledged this source (ie, have claimed the ideas as your own), you will be subject to the penalties for plagiarism. Please note that I do not want a cover page for this or any other essay, but the first page and subsequent pages must include the appropriate information, and make use of appropriate MLA format. Also, please print all essays back-to-back—DOUBLE SPACED!!
