Psychological Disorders Paper
The Extra Credit paper is on a mental or neurological disorder that is listed in the DSM IV, IVTR or V and either develops or becomes present during a life development stage. For example, mental retardation is present at birth or Alzheimer’s develops in older adults or post-partum depression develops in young to middle adult women following pregnancy. You will need to relate the disorder to psychology and life development. Mental disorders are not appropriate unless the disorder is developed through a life stage. For example, major depression or bipolar would not be appropriate since those disorders are not related to a life development stage. Additionally, choosing a disorder like rheumatoid arthritis or fibromyalgia would also not be appropriate because those are physical disorders that are not related to life stage development. If you choose a disorder that is not appropriate and is not approved by the instructor, you will receive a zero for the assignment. If you are unsure if your topic is appropriate, ask the instructor.
Your paper should be three to five pages long (not counting the title and reference pages) and include at least four references. Do not use Wikipedia or Psychology Today. Wikipedia is not an appropriate source for research as the material cannot always be considered factual. Psychology Today is a good magazine for the general public but does not contain enough information for a scholarly paper.
