Biodiversity includes all the vital micro-organisms in the environment. Pesticides have an enormous impact on the environment as its production; use and even disposal affect the biodiversity to which life depends. Currently, the use of pesticides and other chemicals used in crop production have raised significant concerns among the environmentalists. Worms are essential to soil organisms while insects such as beetles and fungi play a role in the decomposition process. Pollination is a crucial factor, and without bees and butterflies, new crops wouldn’t be there ("Biodiversity" 1). With the increasing crop productivity around the globe, farmers are overusing chemical to eliminate the pest from their crops. Some pesticides are broad spectrum, therefore, kills any pest that comes in contact with including the beneficial ones.

Some pesticides also can persist in the environment for long. This may kill generations and generations of environmental organisms and in the long run, annihilating biodiversity. Most of the pesticides used in the farms to control insect pest are sometimes channeled into water bodies such as rivers and lakes. There is also a great need to create awareness n sustainable agriculture such as reduced land tilling and planting of more trees. Therefore, I would like to recommend that the government provide a means and a forum through which citizens will be thought on the importance of sustainable agriculture and reduced chemical use. This could be done through the ministry of agriculture and environment where skilled extension officers will be tasked with passing information to the people.
