Name Instructor Date Critical Review of "Toward User-Intuitive Web Interface Sign Design and Evaluation: a Semiotic Framework" The objective of this article is to identify determinants of user-intuitive interface signs with the aim of improving web usability and end-user experience. In this paper we try to evaluate if a framework can be developed and a heuristic proposed based on empirical studies that can support the design and evaluation of user–intuitive web interface signs in order to improve web usability. In order to support their argument Islam and Bouwman describe four empirical studies. Study I: First an Interface Sign Intuitive Test was conducted to understand user interpretations of 104 signs as used in the Ovi calendar’s interface. The accuracy of their interpretation and the effort it took to decode the meaning of a sign were of an empirically based framework and heuristic to support the design and evaluation of user-intuitive web interface signs in order to improve web usability the Semiotic Interface sign Design and Evaluation (SIDE) framework as proposed in this paper is a first step. Although the value of the framework is partly validated in this research project the framework is of course open to further testing and development. A possible direction for future research in line with the limitations outlined above may be to validate the framework based on using alternative sets of signs and different contexts for instance walking or driving using different access devices with larger samples of subjects and different user profiles. However there are also other avenues to explore. Work Cited Islam Muhammad Nazrul and Harry Bouwman. "Towards User–Intuitive Web Interface Sign Design And Evaluation: A Semiotic Framework".
