Children's literature classics

Argue the case both for and against continuing to regard Treasure Island and Little Women as classics of children’s literature. This option offers you the chance to consider why Treasure Island and Little Women have been regarded as classics of children’s literature for well over a hundred years, and whether this privileged status is still justified. In particular, it allows you to think about what designating a book as ‘classic’ means, and, less obviously, invites you to consider these books within a construction of children’s literature as a definable and discrete set of texts with its own, self-referential history. Ultimately, however, this is an invitation to you to engage in putting the best case for remembering or forgetting these books. Are they to be approved or disapproved of, and on what grounds? What good, if any, are they or should they be to contemporary children? Are they wonderful pieces of moral story-telling? Or are they so regrettably backward-looking that modern writing is inevitably to be preferred? What sort of resource or embarrassment for modernity and the future do they represent? You will find it useful to begin with a solid section considering the terms ‘classic’ and ‘children’s literature’ and offering your own working definition of both. You will find some help with both these tasks in the introduction to Reader 2 Classic Texts and Contemporary Trends (pp. 1–9). You should also find the essays dealing with the history, nature, and value of children’s literature (especially those by Grenby, Carpenter, Hunt, and Reynolds) in section 1 of Reader 1 Approaches and Territories worth revisiting. When it comes to the status of Treasure Island and Little Women from publication onwards, you should find the section introductions to the critical material on these books in Reader 2 Classic Texts and Contemporary Trends helpful, especially where they address reception history. You are advised to give equal space to your arguments for and against the classic status of each book, and to give equal weight to each book. Your essay is likely to be much strengthened by careful use of the critical material provided in the readers, and by judicious quotation from the literary texts themselves. Be wary of plot summary – it rarely supports argumentative points except when done very briefly. Use your conclusion to weigh up the case for and against, and put forward your final opinion.
