The story talks about two lovers who are criminals and stretch their crimes across all corners of America. Starkweather Charles who directly inspires Malick killed a dog and together with his girlfriend, Ann Fugate went out on a killing mission leaving 11 people dead among them were his sister and parents (Rodger np). Malik sees no reasonable meaning for them committing these crimes; neither does he have a psychological explanation. Holly seems simple and primitive while Kit is a psychopath who is handsome and Holly thinks he resembles Dean James. Holly states that their mission is not defined and they had no emotional attachments to dead bodies. In the Voice-over, she talks about her older boyfriend, Kit who is a serial killer.

She feels like this is an achievement on his part and praises him for behaving like an adult. Holly never took part in Kits murder adventures but she did not seem to object them either. Kit has been moulded to suit the pop culture and is seen as a rebellious young boy who resembled James Dean in his characteristics. According to Anne (np), the use of voice-over by Malik prefered voices of young girls such as Holly because it brings out a sense of authenticity in the narrative. The effect of Holly’s voice-over allows us to reflect on the power of her voice. The voice can arouse emotions and make us ponder upon essential questions that go beyond the movie.
