The Farmers’ Alliances hoped to get all farmers as allies. The Farmers’ Alliances had political advocacy as an agenda and thus the agenda propelled to a political outfit. The alliances came together to form the Populist Party in 1892. In the same year, the party went ahead to win 2 governor seats, 5 senator seats, and 10 congressmen positions (Gilded Age, 9). The farmers were most attracted to the party. The victory also placed America in an influential position in international politics (American Imperialism, 10). This victory gave the United States a determining role in the world’s affairs. What were the economic motives for overseas expansion? How were these motives justified racially and philosophically? (Discuss Hawaii and the Philippines!) American imperialism, happening in 1890 – 1913, was intended to create new territories especially the adjacent islands which would be useful to America in various ways including creation of wealth (American Imperialism, 10).

The country would also increase its population which would significantly increase the number of working people. Global expansion would help America to extend the Dollar Diplomacy and protect investments in other parts of the world (American Imperialism, 11). However, their attitude towards the social issues differed in the sense that Jacob Riis set to portray the poor conditions of living for the poor to encourage the government to help them while Addams was directly involved in improving the livelihoods of the poor and the immigrants.
