Cohort Model is a popular model to describe how humans interpret the words that are spoken to them, this one suggests that words will become more recognizable over time (Ward, 2015). Pick any letter and in your brain, you will think and bring up a list of words that begin with that letter. When more of the letters becomes audible, words that no longer match the incoming information are deactivated, until only one word remains. Describe how word recognition is important to treating Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPDs). Word recognition is important to treating Central Auditory Processing Disorders, would help improve perception of individual sounds in words, which can help with reading skills. Develop active listening skills, like asking a person to repeat directions. You see children and adults who have central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) are a heterogeneous group of people who have difficulty using auditory information to communicate and learn. “CAPD is not a specific problem or disease; rather it is a set of problems that occur in different kinds of listening tasks (ASHA, 1996). Often children with CAPD are first diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or learning disabilities. Later, an audiologist may render a diagnosis of CAPD. To audiologists, CAPD includes problems with one or more of the following auditory tasks: • Sound localization and lateralization • Auditory discrimination • Auditory pattern recognition • Temporal aspects of audition (resolution, masking, integration, ordering) • Auditory performance decrements with competing acoustic signals • Auditory performance with degraded acoustic signals” (ASHA, 2018). What treatments might be used to help Myesha recognize words better? Speech therapy can help kids with auditory processing disorder make those sounds better and more clearly. Speech therapists can also help kids learn to: Improve perception of individual sounds (phonemes) in words, which can help with reading skills. Develop active listening skills, like asking a person to repeat directions. Use language appropriately in social situations Kids with auditory processing disorder might get frustrated about school. Imagine not being able to understand what the teacher is saying! Myesha is dealing with frustration, maybe educational therapy can help her. This can help Myesha with different kinds of learning and attention issues develop strategies for working around her issues and dealing with frustration. Auditory training therapy (sometimes called auditory integration therapy) is an alternative treatment for kids with auditory processing disorder. A main goal of these programs is to improve listening comprehension through various activities or games. Keep in mind that auditory training therapy is somewhat controversial. There isn’t a lot of research that shows it works. But there is unreliable evidence that it’s helpful for some kids (Morin, 2018). Some kids with auditory processing disorder also have ADHD or anxiety, which can be treated with medicine. It’s best to talk with the child’s doctor if the parents think that the child is dealing with ADHD or anxiety.
