Topics to choose from
Topics
Please note that these are merely topics to prompt your own interpretations of the texts. They are not thesis statements. It is up to you to narrow the topic down and come up with a clear interpretive argument that can be backed up by careful analysis of your chosen texts.
“Text” refers to any literary work we’ve studied this semester. At least one must be a novel, and at least one must be a text you have not analyzed in a previous assignment. This is a comparative essay, so you may find similarities, differences, or similar threads (strands) between texts. It is not necessary that you only focus on a black and white (all or nothing) argument. You may find that there are some similarities, and some differences between all of them.
The topics from which you may choose are:
1. Science Run Amok: Many of the texts we’ve studied this semester have looked at the
precarious relationship between science and nature, and specifically raise the question of
whether science should tamper with the natural world.
• With respect to two texts we’ve studied this semester, consider this ethical dilemma and
its impact on two characters.
or,
• With respect to two texts we’ve studied this semester, consider the “scientific
abomination” (a creature created by science that goes against nature) and it’s
significance
or• With respect to two texts we’ve studied this semester, interpret the significance of the
“mad scientist” figure (what role do they play, why are characters/readers drawn to the
figure, etc.)
2) Dystopia: Many of the texts we’ve studied have presented a future version of our world that has become dystopian as a result of political oppression
• With respect to two texts we’ve studied this semester, evaluate the struggle between
socialization (society) and the individualization (the self)
or,
• (a slight variation of the above) Consider how two characters, from their respective texts, challenge or resist oppressive governments
or,
• With respect to two texts we’ve studied this semester, analyze “society as the villain” or
“antagonist.”
3. Social Commentary: Many of the texts we’ve studied are reflections of real issues in the real world presented in a defamiliarized way.
• With respect to two texts we’ve studied this semester, analyze a single issue relevant to
our time (political oppression, climate change, destruction of the planet, technological
advancement, media saturation, etc., etc., etc).
** Note** : if you chose this topic, it is not enough to say that these texts are somehow
reflective of a real world issue. You must determine the purpose/value of the issue in the texts themselves and analyze something about them such as their impact on specific
characters, plot, or themes. You can draw out connections to larger real world issues that
you feel the text is commenting on, but you must always stay grounded in textual
analysis. In other words, this is not license to create an opinion paper about world issues.
• With respect to two texts we’ve studied this semester, analyze the existential question
that the text(s) poses, and what, if any, answers you feel they offer.
Note: Yes, this is a big question. Some texts present the questions of human
existence or our place in the universe rather overtly such as in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to
the Galaxy, while others do this with subtlety. With this topic, don’t attempt to tackle every
existential question posed by the texts, but rather, focus on one that you feel overlaps
between the two.
5. The Hero’s Journey: The Hero’s Journey which describes the process a character undergoes
as they learn more about themselves through a series of tests.
• With respect to any two texts we’ve studied this semester, consider the ways that two
characters undergo a transformation. For example:
• ignorance to knowledge
• innocence to experience
• false view of world to corrected view
• idealism to realism
