Some of the major incidences that define the year include; civil protests including students, burning and destruction of property in 130 cities, assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy, Democratic Convention police riot, three-way presidential race, and space race among others. All these events brought about significant changes in the lives of Americans. The assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 which prohibited discrimination of any persons on the basis of race, national origin, and religion among other features (Shi and Tindall, 903). Moreover, the act introduced harsher and stringent rules to handle discrimination issues in the country such as intolerance of discrimination in selling, renting, and house financing. These changes ensured that people, especially the black Americans, would mingle without restrictions.
