In the most seminal of his works The Communist Manifesto Karl Marx clearly identifies the essence of his social theory by saying how: “The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.” And the struggle according to Marx and his followers is always between those who control material means and those who do not. In terms of arts the very same principle can be easily applied as it was very successfully done by Laurie Schneider Adams in the chapter dealing with Marxist conceptual approach to art in her book Methodologies of Art. Adams very early in the text gives a great example of how Marxist theory can influence our understanding of an artistic work. J.M.W. Turner’s the authors cited are largely along the lines of saying that art needs to have a social note to it because if it does not then it is just art for art’s sake and that notion is soundly rejected by Marx and his followers. The greatest value of the text however is the way in which Adams sheds light on some of the most prominent painters in history and how they conducted themselves in the complex world of art vs. capitalism.
