He even gives up the love of his life, Julie, and with a broken spirit, released to the world. In the end, we see that Winston has fully accepted and developed a love for Big Brothers. Many readers are angered by this ending since it reveals how quickly people allow the government to control and manipulate their minds, and this undermines their capacity of thinking for themselves. Few novels have managed to invoke the imagery more than Orwell’s novel 1984. The ending of this piece of literature stands out, and it seems that the author had a purpose of ending it in this manner. The author states that the struggle was over and Winston now loved Big Brother and had, therefore, become victorious over his self (Orwell, 245).
