Multimedia in the classroom

Write 150 words per question 1- Have you used the interactive tools on SMARTBoard or Promethean Boards? If so, what's your favorite tool to use? 2-Have you heard of Brainpop.com yet? What do you think? How would you use it in your classroom? Does this replace teaching? Explain. 3-Have you found your own children come home working on math problems in different ways because of the teaching styles of their different teachers? Or, have you observed teachers in the same grade level teaching in different ways? 4-Hypothetical: An elementary art teacher was told by her principal to begin integrating technology into her art lessons (per district mandates). All she has is a projector and a computer in the classroom. How might she integrate those tools to enhance her instruction? If you were her, what other tech items would you ask your principal for to help enhance instruction? Explain. 5- In one of the Jurassic Park movies, the main actor is talking to a young boy and says that there are two types of boys in the world. Those who want to be astronomers and those that want to become astronauts. The obvious difference being that astronauts live in space, while astronomers only observe from afar. How might this analogy relate to our kiddos and their use of technology at home or in the classroom? 6- Hypothetical: As a new teacher, you just inherited a technology rich classroom. You have clickers, a SMARTboard, a document camera, 6 iPads, 4 student computers, a teacher laptop, a projector, a voice amplifier (microphone and speakers), a digital scanner, 4 video cameras, and a laundry list of subscriptions to educational software. The only problem is this: you haven’t been trained to use most of it. Describe how you would make the most of the classroom you’ve been given. Are there some technologies you would put off using until the next semester? Year? Or, do you adopt the “Fire, ready, AIM!” approach and just jump into it guns blazing? Explain 7- http://www.froguts.com/. How might you use this website to enhance instruction in your future classroom? 8- You’ve gotta love the comical genius of the sales team at DirecTV. In this commercial, we see really quickly the pros and cons of wired and wireless technology. http://www.marketmenot.com/directv-marionette-son-wires-are-ugly-commercial/ How might this commercial apply to technology in your classroom? How might you consider yourself, wired or wireless (in terms of technological know-how)? What about your future students?Explain. 9- What are the benefits of using web tools over software in the classroom? Choose one web tool that interests you that you might use in your target teaching position, and describe how it might enhance instruction. 10- Known as Web 2.0 resources, the following is a list of many webtools that teachers use to enhance instruction in their classroom. Browse through them and choose one to review. Why did you choose it? How will you use it in the classroom? How will your students use it? http://www.edudemic.com/the-35-best-web-2-0-classroom-tools-chosen-by-you/ 11- If you’ve ever seen a collage of words that put emphasis on some words through bold letters or large fonts, then you’ve probably seen a Wordle creation. With Wordle, you input your text, and Wordle highlights those words that are used the most in the text. http://www.wordle.net/ How might you use this as a tool in your classroom? How would students benefit from this web app? 12- As her final project, a dental hygiene student used Wix to create a free website where she posted her final assignments in the form of a webpage. She was applauded by her instructors for “thinking outside of the box”. Could you use this in your future classroom? At what age do you think it would be appropriate? What are some of the limitations? Here’s her page: http://beckylarson.wix.com/portfolio 13- Can Twitter really be used in the classroom? Isn’t it just to post things about your day or your recent activity? Here is an article that claims to list 30 ways to use Twitter in the classroom. Choose one or two ways to use Twitter in the classroom and describe how you would use it in your future classroom. http://www.edudemic.com/the-30-newest-ways-to-use-twitter-in-the-classroom/ 14- “Do not confine your children to your own learning, for they were born in another time” Chinese proverb Those Chinese proverbists were pretty smart guys. However, I've noticed in my tenure as a teacher that education seems to be very cyclical in nature. In staff meetings I would always here our veteran teachers mumbling under their breaths that they had done the district's "new" initiative 15 years earlier, but they called it something else. It's amazing what pretty new packaging will do to an old idea or concept. While I believe that we need to be teaching to our students in our time, there are some pretty timeless ideas and pedagogy that will never get old. Can you think of any of these "Timeless" things/ideas that have been applied to technology or even current pedagogy? 15- Sometimes I find myself having to look up some of the jargon and slang of our youth. Find the definition of Web 2.0 in http://www.urbandictionary.com/ . You’ll notice that there are usually a variety of clever definitions for Web 2.0. Imagine you were creating your own definition of Web 2.0. What would it say? (Have fun with it and keep it classy – include part of speech, a definition, and a few examples of Web 2.0.)
