2. Single System Research Assignment.
Throughout this semester students will be performing a single subject research investigation. For this assignment students will identify a behavior that they would like to modify, keep a record of their behavior, investigate empirically based interventions to modify this behavior, select an intervention to modify their behavior and apply it, continue keeping a record of their behavior, and then follow up with an assessment of their findings. Specific steps in this assignment include:
Step 1: Identify something you need to change in your life (stress management, time management, procrastination, depression, anxiety, smoking cessation, healthy eating, nail biting, sleep management, etc.). Please select a very low risk behavior to modify that does not pose any risk to modify and does not require professional monitoring or intervention.
Step 2: Read the chapter and review the learning module on Single System Research.
Step 3: Select a single subject design you will use to track your behavior. At a minimum you must have an A and a B component to your design. (C4, K1)
Step 4: Operationalize your behavior using at least two of the common ways that target problems can be measured on page 152 (frequency, duration, interval, magnitude, presence or absence). Begin monitoring your behavior (A, baseline phase) and record your behavior on a monitoring chart. Monitor and record your behavior for at least 3 weeks.
Step 5: Without doing any research about interventions, students will demonstrate multiple ways of knowing by making a post to the course discussion board which outlines the behavior they are working to change and their intuitive sense about three possible methods they could use to change their behavior and why they believe these methods might work. (C4K3 multiple ways of knowing)
Step 6: After you have recorded your behavior for at least 3 weeks, work with social work librarian Fran Mentch and conduct a scholarly review of the literature to find at least four peer reviewed journal articles that contain research evidence about modifying this type of behavior. Identify at least 4 scholarly research articles from CSU library journals that discuss at least two differnt interventions to modify this behavior. Make sure at least one of the articles you select is from a social work source and at least one is from a non-social work source (such as psychology, nursing, etc). (C4K3 multiple ways of knowing, multidisciplinary sources).
Step 7: Review theories of human behavior and the social environment, note which theories pertain to the issue you are working on and begin to consider the role of these theories.
Step 8: After you have recorded at least 3 weeks of your baseline phase (A), select an intervention that you will use to modify your behavior. Note you will likely need to rely on self-help interventions. Begin applying the intervention and measure the intervention phase (B) for at least 3 weeks. Be sure to record if you are correctly and consistently applying the intervention.
Step 9: After 3 weeks in the intervention phase (B), use qualitative and quantitative methods (C9K4) to examine your behavioral outcomes thus far. Write a paragraph discussing if based on the data you need to modify the intervention or the measurement of the intervention. Be sure to identify the trend in the data using at least two research terms (increasing, decreasing, stable, unstable, cyclical), and selected a plan regarding modification for the intervention based on the data. In your paragraph, demonstrate your understanding that research is a dynamic and iterative process. (C9K1) Turn this component in with your final Professional Powerpoint assignment (see Step 10). You may apply a second (C) intervention if desired at this point, but this is not required. Continue to record your behavior for an additional 2 weeks.
Step 10: Create a professional Powerpoint to share with your classmates (colleagues). In this PowerPoint please include the following slides (C4K4):
Slide 1: Title of your research investigation and your name
Slide 2: Clear description of the problem behavior and the clearly defined goal. Make sure the goal is operationalized and framed in a positive way.
Slide 3: Review the empirical evidence that supports at least 2 intervention approaches that can be used to modify this behavior. Be sure to cite at least four scholarly research articles (found through the library journal database) about evidence-based techniques to modify behavior. You must include APA citations for all four articles. You must have at least one article from a social work source and at least one article from a non-social work source. Please identify what discipline each article comes from. For example, “A social worker, Stoddard-Dare (2016) noted that cognitive behavioral therapy is an intervention that can be used to reduce depression. OR “From the field of medicine we learned that nicotine replacement can reduce cravings for cigarettes by 23% (Hoss, 2015).
Slide 4: Present the intervention that was selected and include a rationale which includes at least two to three supporting reasons that justify your selection of that intervention. Describe how you measured and operationalized the intervention.
Slide 5: Describe the single subject design selected and include an operational definition of the behavior being measured, and the frequency and duration of measurement. Be sure to provide labels for the X and Y axis.
Slide 6: Provide a labeled graph of your findings (include both the A and the B components and any additional phases if they were used, e.g. C). See page figure 7.2 on page 157 for an example. Be sure to label the axis, the A, and the B phases. Clearly identified where the intervention began.
Slide 7: Examine your behavioral outcomes at the 3 week mark post-intervention. Correctly identified the trend in the data using at least two research terms (increasing, decreasing, stable, unstable, cyclical), and select a plan regarding how to proceed based on the data (for ex, should the intervention be continued, modified, replaced) based on the data. Discuss if, based on the data, you chose to modify the intervention or the measurement of the intervention or if you chose to continue with the original intervention. If you made some changes, please describe them and include them in your discussion.
Slide 8: Provide an overall assessment of the efficacy of this intervention in modifying the client’s behavior using data from weeks one through eight based on the graphed results. Specifically comment about if you applied a correct and consistent intervention (process evaluation) throughout the B phase and what impact you think that may have had on your overall outcome. (C9K2)
Slide 9: Continue your assessment by identifying a theory of human behavior and the social environment. Critically evaluate and apply this theory as you evaluate and discuss your outcomes. (C9K3)
