Name Professor Course Date The relationship of Piet Mondrian’s Broadway ‘Boogie Woogie’ to De Stijl Movement and Modernist abstraction. Abstract In this paper I explore the relationship of Broadway ‘Boogie Woogie’ to De Stijl movement and Modernist Abstraction as well. Broadway ‘Boogie Woogie’ was the last painting completed by Piet Mondrian. It has clear indicators of its relationship with De Stijl movement as well as Modernist Abstraction. In its preliminary studies the work of art is characterized by long lines on the grid with little bands in unbounded color which is characteristic of alterations Piet Mondrian made while in New York (Bois and McIntosh 265). This was on the paintings he did during his final times in Europe. The influence acquired in New York must have greatly determined his work on the sketch of Broadway Boogie-Woogie. Mondrian born in the Netherlands in 1878 painted traditional images in an abstract organizing his canvas like in a regular weave. The statement that ‘if we cannot free ourselves we can free ourselves’ has not been studied in relation to the works by Piet Mondrian and studying it would shed light on the motivations behind the Broadway ‘Boogie Woogie’ as well as its interpretation. It is important to understand the relationship since it also influences the future of visual presentations and art in general.
