The more I advanced in age the more I became aware of the differences in the society. This made me aware of myself and the individual the society was molding me into, and because of this I have become conscious of others and more aware of choices that I make which has positively impacted both my social and private life. People live differently but one thing I have witnessed in my life is that we live in a multicultural society but not all individuals will embrace this diversity. I will look at how my family life and childhood experiences shaped my view on racism ethnicity and multiculturalism. I grew up in a highly racial and ethnic segregation era. While growing up, Black American entertainers did not have platforms as they do today.

At a time that Caucasians dominated media outlets, they felt discriminated as white music and actors were preferred to blacks. To have a voice the black American population created their own platforms such as the Black Entertainment Television (BET). After the creation of the station, people realized that ethnicity and tribal conflicts were more than what was perceived. The issue of racial profiling has not died down. These aspects have really impacted my life and how I live. My family was a middle class family and in a place New York, high cultural and social diversity pointed this out to me at an early age. I was quickly able to understand that I was white not Black American, Asian or Latina neither was I rich or poor.

Having been in a family of four sisters and two brothers I was taught to appreciate and treat all genders equally so it was never a determinant for success to me. I witnessed my four elder sisters, excel in their academics and careers. At young age these values and knowledge that all individuals are equal and that skin color does not define people. (Zito, 2014). Laws that make it a crime for racial and ethnic profiling should be implemented so that new generations can exist in a world that people are not judged based on their skin colour, social statuses and their religious beliefs. Hence issues of racism or discrimination should not be handled in secret but brought out in public to create awareness in the society (Labovitz, 2007).
