Vol. 55 no. 2 Winter 1997 88-99 Judith Russell compares the three most important female characters in this play to the three Greek mythological figures that were known as the fates; Clotho Lachesis and Atropos. These three fates were responsible for particular aspects to the human race. The three women in this one-act play are Mrs. Peters Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Wright. These women lived at a particular period when the women were social politically and economically downtrodden by their male counterparts. With the murder of John Wright Minnie's husband these three women play a very significant role in the eventual cover-up of the true story. In references to the three Greek mythological characters the author reflects the role each of the women played to cover a sin was hence a good person to the society but the same could not be said of his home. With the way things ended up it brought out the picture of what Minnie had been going through for twenty years of marriage. She was in an abusive marriage and with a patronizing husband. Being childless we can conclude her essential center of happiness being her slain pet bird. To the women Minnie's action was therefore justified. Works cited Angel Marina.
