"The Grand Inquisitor" by F. Dostoevsky

“The Grand Inquisitor”, by F. Dostoevsky (1880), translated by David McDuff (1993): http://www2.hawaii.edu/~freeman/courses/phil100/11. Dostoevsky.pdf Read this excerpt from the 1880 novel The Brothers Karamazov, by Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky (See above link, and attachment). Although the piece is only 11 pages long, you will want to allow yourself enough time to read it carefully and thoughtfully. Reading the short introductory section and answering the Questions at the end of the document will help you make better sense of the content. As you read, pay attention to any ways in which this work corresponds to other texts we have encountered in this course (Euripides' Greek Tragedy "Herakles," Plato’s "Allegory of the Cave," and Art Spiegelman's "Maus"). Answer the following questions regarding the text in 2-3 pages minimum: 1. What is the point of Dostoevsky’s story about the Grand Inquisitor? 2. Would it be fair to say that the Inquisitor is correct in his estimation of human nature? 3. List any themes or topics presented in the text which overlap with those in the works covered so far (See below) NOTE: The aforementioned texts and corresponding themes or topics are as follows: 1). Herakkles by Euripides • Themes/Topics: Heroism, Human Nature, Violence, Masculinity 2). Maus by Art Spiegelman • Themes/Topics: Racism, Dehumanization, Moral Absolutism, Authoritarianism, "Us vs. Them" Identitarianism 3). Allegory of the Cave" by Plato) • Themes/Topics: 'Ignorance is bliss,' the burden of knowledge, the importance of critical thinking, 'absolutely power corrupts absolutely,' Faith as being the deliberate suspension of one's critical faculties.
