I HAVE UPLOADED THE AD THAT I WANT TO USE Your goal will be to analyze the ad in detail, paying close attention to the rhetorical strategy of the ad, and explain how it appeals to its target audience (and explain the characteristics of that audience).Your analysis will touch briefly on the “surface meaning” (or in the case of an advertisement, the main method it uses to sell you a product), as ultimately your essay must seek to reveal significant aspects (interpretations) of the ad that your reader may not otherwise see. In order to do this, think beyond the image or ad itself to look at the larger cultural framework. Consider how this ad confirms/illustrates/challenges cultural beliefs and assumptions. Assignment: Choose an advertisement that attempts to reach different audiences and write a thesis-driven essay that both describes the ad in detail and analyzes the rhetorical strategies it is using. For example, you might choose a car ad aimed at men and women; a food ad aimed at teens and parents; or a clothing ad aimed at two types of women, teenagers and young adults, maybe slender women, at that. Remember that your analysis should be organized around a thesis that makes a clear, specific claim about these ads. Perhaps you will explore why one ad relies on ethos or mainly on pathos to sell a product to different audiences. Or perhaps you can make a claim about what you think the ad says about the audiences or cultures it is trying to persuade. Make sure you have chosen an ad you feel is complex, with many of the rhetorical elements we’ve discussed in class such as appeals to logos (logic), ethos (credibility), and pathos (emotions/values). What is the ad trying to get its audience to think and feel? Why? Audience: You should assume that your readers have not seen the ad you’re analyzing. With that in mind, your ad descriptions must be clear and vivid so that your readers can really understand the ad and the claims you’re making about them. Don’t be afraid to make strong, arguable claims about the ad, but remember to support those claims with evidence and logical thought. Don’t just assume that your audience will know what you mean. Explain yourself. Pay special attention to: 1. Use of type, layout, color, and image. Include the image in the paper. 2. Purpose and audience. 3. The appeal to logos, the logic of the ad. 4. The appeal to ethos and the credibility of the advertiser. 5. The appeal to pathos (emotion). 6. The advertiser’s cultural perspectives. 7. Finally, you’ll want to consider how the text and visual work together. Requirements: • All essays should be at least 2 ½ -3 pages in length. Well-developed essays may exceed the length, but all essays should meet the minimum requirement. • Be sure to include the ad image in your paper. The image does not count toward your paper length. • All essays should be in standard MLA manuscript form, including size 12.0 Times New Roman font, double-spaced text, and standard 1 inch margins. All essays will have a header with the student’s last name and page number in the top right hand corner of every page ½ inch from the margin. • The first four lines of the first page should be the student’s name, the instructor’s name, the course, and the date. This identifying information will appear on page one only. • All essays should have a creative and original title. • All paragraphs should have a clear topic sentence outlining the main idea, clear and vivid language, and logical organization.
