For this reason the American popular culture has been emulated all over the globe but the full transition has been limited by various social factors. The transition into the American culture for immigrants has been problematic and this is due to issues such as social identity, age and at times even gender. This paper will therefore elaborate the effects of these factors by comparing two essays the China Doll and the Great Expectations. Similarities. The first common factor between these two essays is the theme of the border within cultures. In Alaina’s life, the Barbie doll was the epitome of beauty as it resembled a true princess. She describes the doll to be having ‘long blond hair that you could brush and a beautiful shiny gown.

’ She goes ahead and compares the doll with her friend Sarah as she admires the way her blond pigtails swung around her head when she was called by her mother to go help with some chores. The struggle appears in the way she describes her doll Kira which she has been told looks like her, by saying that ‘it didn't even slip on like real clothes. My doll had straight black hair, no shoes, and worst of all, she didn't even know how to smile right’ (Wang). In this situation, she is doubting her doll which looks like her, but she ends normally with no offense taken afterward. Therefore anybody reading this essay wouldn’t end up getting any negative vibes from it.
