GROUNDWATER POLLUTION LAB Name______________________________________________ PURPOSE: To demonstrate how water infiltration can carry pollutants underground MATERIALS: food coloring (or Kool-Aid/ anything that will have a color that you can track the movement or flow), slice of white bread, metal tray (baking dish) and class of water and spoon PROCEDURE: 1. Set the metal tray/ baking dish on your work area. 2. Hold the bread vertically on top of the tray. 3. Add two drops of food coloring to the top crust edge of the bread slice. (If you do not have food coloring in your house you can use a pack of Kool-Aid and add some into 1 ounce of water) If you have neither of these please let me know and I will provide you with other options you could use. 4. Using the cup of water, take your teaspoon and place 2 teaspoons of water on the same spot where you placed the food coloring. 5. Record 5 observations as the bread sits for 5 minutes. a. b. c. d. e.
