This is the directions for the Research paper Research Paper Assignment Length : 4-5 pages (plus Works Cited) in MLA format Format : All drafts must be typed according to MLA style guidelines (12-point Times New Roman font, double spaced, 1" margins, with proper header). Include a works cited page listing entries for your primary text(s) and all secondary sources consulted (not included in page count). You are to write a literary analysis from one of the following prompts. You may use any works that are on the syllabus for the term. You may use other works from our textbook only with prior permission from the instructor. You may select from the following prompts: Select two elements of fiction (plot, point of view, character, tone/style, setting, theme, symbol) and analyze the use of those elements within a single story. What are the overall effects of the elements? How does the writer use the elements to convey his or her meaning? How do the elements enhance our understanding or enjoyment of the story? Compare the use of one single element of fiction in any two of the stories we have covered. You may elect to compare the use of an element in a story we have read with the use of the same element in a story we have not read only with prior permission. Analyze one of the stories on the syllabus from a cultural, historical, and/or biographical perspective . How is the story representative of the time and place in which it was written? How do the details of the author’s own life experiences influence the story? Explicate a poem . Use the explication guidelines handout and the poetry terms we have discussed this term. You may organize by stanza (as outlined in the explication guidelines) or by device/element. This should be very in-depth. Regardless of which approach you take, you will be expected to present an analysis of the text. Thus, you should have an overarching claim or argument about the text which you will present in your thesis statement and prove through evidence from the text itself. Support your claim in a well-organized, focused essay, using ethos, logos, and pathos. Conduct research to help you form or strengthen your argument. Use 3-5 credible secondary sources. Use at least one scholarly journal article (online or print), one book (digital or print), and one (credible!) website. Be sure to cite appropriately within your text and also be sure that your overall claim is your own, formed from your understanding of the text, and not borrowed from a source. Assessment : Your paper will be evaluated on the following criteria: Purpose (10%) – Clearly state your purpose as a thesis statement. Support (30%) – Be sure your have enough evidence to support your claims. You should have a mix of logos, ethos, and pathos. Focus on concrete details and use language that evokes strong images and/or emotions. Organization (20%) – Include transitions between paragraphs so your essay is easy to follow and present your information in a logical order, perhaps least- to most-important or most- to least-important. Citations and Sources (20%) – Cite sources as needed. In-text citations and works cited page should follow appropriate format. Follow directions regarding the number and type of sources. Mechanics (20%) – Your essay should be free from grammatical errors, including shifts in verb tense and point of view. In addition to the final paper, you will also be presenting your project orally to the class during our last meeting. You should prepare to speak to the class for 6-8 minutes about your research paper. You may prepare handouts, slideshows, or any other media you feel will enhance our understanding of your topic. Be creative! However, if you show video that you did not create, that should take up no more than half of your presentation time. _______________________________________________ Short Essay assignments: 1.
