Paradox

The theme of the essay is the nature of paradoxes, as considered in our study of two specific paradoxes, concerning motion and time respectively. Structure your essay in response to the specific questions below. 1.1. What is a paradox? Explain briefly and succinctly. 1.2. What is Zeno’s paradox of motion? How is Zeno’s paradox argued? In your own understanding, what seems most paradoxical or problematic in Zeno’s view? See the discussion in our text, A Brief History of the Paradox, Chapters 1 through 4, supplemented by the Professor Notes formulating a version of the paradox. 1.3. What is McTaggart’s theory of time? How does McTaggart argue that time is unreal? See pp. 184-186 of our text, A Brief History of the Paradox, and consider the discussion in Chapters 12 and 13, leading up to McTaggart’s view, supplemented by the Professor Notes on McTaggart’s view. Does McTaggart’s view present a paradox? Why or why not? 1.4. Do recent views in mathematics or in physics “solve” these two paradoxes? Consider each briefly, but choose one and write a brief response. Regarding Zeno’s paradox: You may consider pp. 54-57, 322-326 of our text, A Brief History of Paradox, or take a look at the Wikipedia article on Georg Cantor. However, do not get lost in the mathematical details, just look for the gist of Cantor’s theory of transfinite numbers and consider how this theory might apply to Zeno’s argument. Regarding the theory of time in physics: You may consider pp. 77-78 of our text, A Brief History of Paradox, or take a look at the article “Being and Becoming in Modern Physics” online at the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. However, do not get lost in the details of the physics, just look for the gist of Einstein’s theory of space-time and consider how this theory might apply to McTaggart’s theory (paradox?) of time.
