Functionalists argue that racial steering is harmful in the long run as it causes institutionalized racism by setting up slavery practices. According to interactionism perspective, institutionalized racism results from the misconceived feelings of identifying oneself with a dominant race. The prejudice surrounding this perception is that racial segregation promotes the status quo which eventually results to institutionalized racism. Their main aim is to keep a certain race in the neighborhoods/areas of poverty where there is a lot of crime taking place. In the United States, the African Americans are being forced to such areas. This is not the case as it is probably a few of them that get involved in those evil activities. It is therefore mean for every Mexican to be called a criminal yet there are some who even behave better than the Americans themselves.
