CASE REPORT GUIDELINES This is a group project assignment (each group will have 2 students). Your professor will assign you a publicly traded company from one of the major market indices (indexes). Your group will select another company from the same industry group. Cover Page The cover page includes the name of the company, the names of the group members, the date of submission, and course name and number. Table of Contents This page includes each major heading that appears in the report and gives a page reference for each. This should be composed using Word software. INTRODUCTION This should be a brief introduction of your paper and company, outlining your objectives in the paper; no more than a couple of paragraphs. COMPANY HISTORY This part of your paper is a brief history of the two companies you have chosen. It should be about 2 pages in length. Include a brief profile, current events and any future plans and prospects highlighted in the most recent annual reports of both the companies. INDUSTRY ANALYSIS This section of your paper includes an analysis of the industry in which your companies operate. Identify the industry (to include the SIC code) and provide basic information for the industry, such as industry growth and industry profits in general. Do not include any benchmarking in this section. This should not be more than 2 pages. This is only for general information about the industry FINANCIAL ANALYSIS This is the major portion of your paper! Data collection: The students will be required to collect the financial data of the selected companies for 5 years. Most of the data can be collected from online databases available on RMC’s web site and other databases that come with the textbook (Thomson One). Computations and analysis: Calculate the following ratios for both the companies. These ratios represent a wide spectrum of financial analysis, such as liquidity, asset management, debt management, and profitability. RATIOS (select two from each category) Liquidity: Current Ratio & Quick Ratio Asset management: Inventory Turnover, Days’ Sales in Receivables, & Total Asset Turnover Debt management: Debt to Equity Ratio & Times Interest Earned Ratio (TIE), & Total Debt Ratio Profitability Ratios: Profit Margin (PM), Return on Assets (ROA) & Return on Equity (ROE) Alternate names of some of the ratios: 1. Quick Ratio = Acid Test Ratio 2. Days’ Sales in Receivables = Days’ Sales outstanding (DSO) 3. Debt to Equity ratio = Total Liabilities to Net Worth (NW) 4. Profit Margin = Return on Sales 5. Return on Equity = Return on Net Worth (NW) Note: If you cannot do 2 ratios under “liquidity”, you may select one from liquidity and one additional ratio from some other category so that you have 8 ratios altogether. Here is the suggested way to present ratios for trend analysis and benchmarking. Example Current Ratio Year 1 Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 A Corp. B Corp. Industry Once the ratios are calculated, students will be required to make trend analysis based on five-year data and interpret the results. Benchmarking: Benchmarking is the term used for comparing an individual company’s performance against the industry. Industry ratios for benchmarking can be gathered from different sources. One of the important sources could be a publication from Bunn & Bradstreet. You can refer to “Industry Norms and Key Business Ratios” published by Dunn & Bradstreet (available in RMU library). Dun and Bradstreet numbers can be found in hardcover in the library and can also be accessed thru the databases. You just need one year (the latest year) industry ratios for Benchmarking. Stock price behavior: Study the stock price behavior of two selected companies for the last five years. Students can use charts from “bigcharts.com” or from “yahoo finance”. Interpretation, conclusion, and report writing: Students should be able to interpret the results drawn from their analysis. Mere calculation of ratios will not be enough. Students are expected to demonstrate the understanding of ratios and should be able to comment on the financial health of the companies. CONCLUSION Identify and briefly detail the key issue(s) facing the company based on your findings. Describe the possible strategies the firm could adopt, and evaluate each alternative in terms of advantages and disadvantages. Also, make your recommendations. Tell what you think the company should do. Plus, based on your overall evaluation, would you recommend investing in this company? This section should be no more than one page in length. WORK CITED Grading Rubric for the Group Project is as follows: Section Points Total Points 1. Introduction 2 2. Company History 4 3. Industry Analysis 4 4.
