Literary Analysis For this assignment you will examine the essay "e; A Modest Proposal"e; by Jonathan Swift and use the theme/symbolism of the satire to interpret Swift's seemingly outrageous idea. You will want to begin by examining the rhetorical situation in which the writer is writing, and any potential biases on the part of the author or audience. You will create a thesis after you have examined every criteria and element within the text. Only after the completion of the evaluation, should you create a thesis statement and choose three to four strategies to examine using examples (direct quotes and paraphrased information) from the text and strategies that best support your thesis. Basic structure for a literary analysis is as follows: 1. An introduction including * A creative hook * A summarization of the text's rhetorical situation * Your thesis statement Your intro: The author (date of life) Date of the publication. Audience- type of publication The Hook- quote- question- state unsual statement. Briefly- one sentence of the essay seems to be about. Thesis: should contain the word satire in it. 2. Summary that is * Brief, neutral and independent * No more than two- three paragraphs in lengths. 2nd paragraph ( more detail) use background overview of the essay times historically the audience the background of Jonathan Swift. 3. Body Paragraphs including * Topic sentences * Integration of direct quotes and paraphrased materials as support * Explanation of the support in relation to your thesis. 4. A Conclusion including * A restatement of the main ideas and thesis * An explanation of what the author could have done to better convince their audience 5. A Work Cited page that * Includes all referenced materials including the source text. (The source text includes our text book called Writing Today, Third Edition.
